Our Green Key Commitment
The Green Key label is the international eco-label for sustainable tourism and leisure activities. Think of it as a quality mark showing that you travel, meet, or relax in a sustainable way! Green Key is active in no fewer than 65 countries, from Belgium to South Africa, with over 3,200 certified locations. Each of these places is fully committed to a greener world, without compromising on comfort or affordability.
You can find this label in all kinds of places: from B&Bs, holiday homes, and campsites to hotels, holiday parks, restaurants, and – yes! – hostels. Ten of our hostels are now proud to hold the Green Key label, and we aim to make all our hostels just as sustainable.

Take only memories,
leave only footprints.

Commitment
We collect rainwater and switch to energy-efficient lighting.
Once a month we check our consumption.
We enthusiastically take on the challenge of reducing our CO₂ footprint, and we encourage our guests to do the same.
Each year an action plan is created to keep improving.
We use cleaning products with an eco-label.
We sort waste smartly and try to reduce it.
We prefer to avoid chemical pesticides and boost biodiversity in the garden.
We offer as many eco and Fairtrade products as possible and are working on adding more organic options: good for you and the planet.
All rooms and spaces are non-smoking.
Bike, scooter, bus, tram… any environmentally friendly transport option is top for us!
We cannot save the planet alone; we need everyone around us.

Don’t waste water
Daydreaming is great when you’re on holiday, but not while you’re in the shower. Did you know you use 10 liters per minute when showering? With our water-saving shower heads, we reduce that to 6 liters per minute. And if you wash your hair a little faster, you can save even more.
Our plants love rainwater
Our plants get all the rainwater they need! We collect rain in a large tank and use it to water indoor and outdoor plants. Good for nature and for the wallet.
We also reuse rainwater to flush toilets. Smart, right?
A green roof, literally and figuratively
We have a green roof full of succulents that not only convert CO₂ into oxygen but also filter fine particles from the air. The rainwater that falls on it is purified and drained off more slowly, contributing to a clean, green environment and less pressure on the sewer system. Handy and sustainable!
Nice warm and sustainable feet
Underfloor heating is not only cozy for your feet, it’s also very sustainable! Because it heats a large surface, it can run at a lower temperature, using less energy. Feel those green vibes under your feet!
Travel far, travel wide,
but travel with care and respect.

The ultimate goal
At Hi Flanders, we are fully committed to sustainability! Our goal? By 2030, all our hostels should have the Green Key label. But it doesn’t stop there: we also want everyone to think sustainability as soon as they discover Hi Flanders.
How will we achieve this? We focus on clear communication with our guests and invest in our teams: more training on sustainability and plenty of opportunities for staff to actively contribute to our green policy. Together, we make Hi Flanders a truly sustainable choice!
Let’s make sure the journey respects the planet we all share.
Dear Hi Flanders guest,
Will you join us on a journey toward a more sustainable world? Every little action counts, and it really does! We hope to see you soon in one of our hostels. Great! And you’ll come by train, right? ;-)
